Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an innovative, evidence-based listening therapy developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and rooted in the principles of Polyvagal Theory—also known as the “science of feeling safe.” At Triumph, we have integrated SSP into our therapeutic offerings to support students facing challenges such as trauma, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, behavioral regulation difficulties, and social withdrawal. This non-invasive intervention uses filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve and calm the nervous system, promoting a state of safety and enhancing social engagement. By helping regulate the physiological state, SSP allows our students to access deeper emotional healing and become more receptive to other therapeutic interventions. The five-hour protocol is delivered through headphones under the guidance of trained Triumph clinicians, either in person or remotely, and is part of our broader effort to provide cutting-edge, compassionate care that supports the whole child.

Empowering Change Through the Science of Sound

Filtered Music Therapy

The music used in the SSP is carefully filtered to highlight specific frequencies that activate the middle ear muscles and vagus nerve, which are connected to our sense of safety and ability to engage socially.

Stimulates the Vagus Nerve

Vagal activation helps shift the body from a defensive or reactive state into one of calm, openness, and rest—laying the groundwork for improved communication, learning, and healing.

Enhances Social Engagement

Clients often show improved eye contact, facial expressiveness, and responsiveness in relationships, which supports therapeutic progress and stronger interpersonal skills.
