Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Personalized ADHD Support for Adolescents in a Structured Environment

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurodevelopmental condition affecting millions of children and teens, often continuing into adulthood. It is characterized by difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Adolescents with ADHD may face challenges such as low self-esteem, troubled relationships, substance abuse, and struggles with academic performance. ADHD is classified into three types: Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, Predominantly Inattentive, and Combined Type, each with its own set of symptoms affecting behavior and focus.

Common ADHD Symptoms by Type:

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type:

    • Frequent fidgeting

    • Difficulty staying seated when expected

    • Restlessness and constant need to be busy

    • Acting before thinking; impulsive decisions

    • Excessive talking and blurting out answers

    • Interrupting others and difficulty waiting turns

  • Predominantly Inattentive Type:

    • Careless mistakes and difficulty sustaining attention

    • Appearing not to listen even when spoken to directly

    • Trouble following instructions and finishing tasks

    • Problems with organization and forgetfulness

    • Easily distracted and avoiding tasks requiring mental effort

  • Combined Type:

    • Symptoms from both hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive types

While ADHD cannot be cured, appropriate treatment, including behavioral interventions and sometimes medication, can significantly improve symptoms and help teens develop the skills needed for success in school and life.
